After the Main Street grade crossing replacement, the track work began in earnest the weekend of April 28 and 29 2007. First up were the switches south of Broad Street, one from Track 2 to Track 1 and the other from Track 1 to the Stony Creek Branch. Earlier in the week, the track department removed the switch to the Stony Creek in order to speed up the removal of Track 1. |
Shortly after the last train at about 12:30 AM, the cutting had begun. |
After the rail was cut and separated from the ties, it was dragged off by the Swingmaster. |
Even with all the machinery, some jobs, like pulling spikes, still have to be done by hand. |
With self-powered lights to illuminate the area, SEPTA was prepared to work round the clock in order to have the line up and running for Monday morning rush hour. |
