SEPTA Lansdale Station Lansdale PA December 12 2006

For the past couple years SEPTA has been reconfiguring trackwork on their Main Line. Having completed work in Jenkintown, Glenside and Gwynedd to the south, they have finally reached Lansdale and Dale Interlocking. Dale Interlocking is the junction of the Main Line and two branch lines, the Doylestown Branch to the north and east and the Stony Creek Branch to the south and west. The entire interlocking will be reworked with a universal crossover to allow double movements through the area, and included in the project are major changes to the station area as well. This is the beginning of a continuing series that, over the next several months, will detail the various activities relating to the Dale Interlocking project.

Of course, at the start of the construction phase of the project is the digging. The C&S (communications and signals) department has begun to lay conduit for the new wiring.

The areas to be excavated have been marked with orange paint, from the passenger station down to the old freight station at the Stony Creek Branch . The concrete piers will be used for the foundations for the new signal equipment. Some work has already by done, such as the installation of the new signal shed at Broad Street (gray metal building in the background), and, need we mention, the now infamous traffic signals. Also soil tests have been made on the area north of the station where the high level platforms will be erected, and the rails have been marked where new items such as catenary structures and bumper posts will go. More on that later.
The main victim of all this progress will be the Lansdale watch tower. For the last 150 years, someone has kept a watchful eye over the crossings at Broad and Main Streets, however that vigil is scheduled to end on August 15 2007. Stay tuned.
