Join the Steel Plant Museum in welcoming Angela Keppel, owner of the popular blog "Discovering Buffalo, One Street at a Time!" Ms. Keppel will present the stories behind the names of some of our most famous and interesting streets.

November 1st at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center,  6:30pm - 8:30pm

Join the Steel Plant Museum in welcoming Rick Falkowski, a historian focusing on the music of Buffalo! His presentation will celebrate all the styles of music which made Buffalo an exciting place in the first half of the twentieth century.

October 4th at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center,  6:30pm - 8:30pm

Join the Steel Plant Museum in welcoming Dr. Timothy Kneeland of Nazareth College! Dr. Kneeland recently published a book detailing the devastation and widespread impact of this storm. This is particularly timely, as this year marks the 40th anniversary of the storm! Books will be available for purchase.

September 30th, 2017 at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center.
Saturday - 10:00am - 5:00pm.

Please join us for the 3rd Annual Steelfest! This event will take place in the parking lot of the Heritage DiscoveRY Center Buffalo. Local craftsmen and cultural organizations will be setting up tables with information and goods for sale. The event will also feature Lloyd's Taco Truck and the unveiling of our new exhibit.


         Our September Public Meeting will be held on Thursday the 21st, 2017 at the Don Owens Center on the Heritage Discovery Campus located at 100 Lee Street in the City of Buffalo starting at 7:00pm.

The theme of our September meeting will be about the New York Central and their passenger trains. As part of the program, we are happy to be joined by Joan Scalfani. For a 15-month span in 1960 and 1961, Joan worked a job she described as "walking from New York to Chicago." Of course, she was not hitting the pavement herself for those 960 miles. She was riding on the 20th Century Limited passenger train as one of their famous hostesses. Its sure to be a fascinating talk.

There is ample free parking and is open to the general public. Guests are always welcome.

September 6th at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center,  6:30pm - 8:30pm

Join Gerald Halligan, author of the definitive history of the city of Lackawanna. His presentation will cover the entire history of this city, from its roots in 1909 as a section of West Seneca to its prominence as the "Steel City."

Doors open at 5:30 PM, presentation begins at 6:30 PM. The Museum will be open before, during, and after the presentation. Pizza, snacks and refreshments will be available. Admission is free.

August 12th at 12:30pm - 3:30pm at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center.
Doors open at 12:30pm. Admission is $3.00 at the door.

On August 13th, To celebrate the 71st Anniversary of the end of World War II, the Steel Plant Museum will be hosting a Rosie the Riveter Rally! We will be joined by The Buffalo Dolls, and some real life Rosies! Come out and celebrate their hard work to secure our freedom! Please wear your best Rosie outfit! We will be sending in photos of our Rosie look-a-likes to the American Rosie the Riveter Association! Pizza and refreshments will be available.


August 2nd at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center,  6:30pm - 8:30pm

Join Mark Lozo, Education Chief at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site! Mr. Lozo will discuss the events leading up to Theodore Roosevelt holding the swearing-in ceremony at a private Buffalo home in September 1901.

Doors open at 5:30 PM, presentation begins at 6:30 PM. The Museum will be open before, during, and after the presentation. Pizza, snacks and refreshments will be available. Admission is free.

July 5th at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center,  6:30pm - 8:30pm

Join the Steel Plant Museum in welcoming Jim Pace, former West Seneca town historian and current President of the West Seneca Historical Society! Mr. Pace will present the history of West Seneca, in what is sure to be an exciting talk.

Doors open at 5:30 PM, presentation begins at 6:30 PM. The Museum will be open before, during, and after the presentation. Pizza, snacks and refreshments will be available. Admission is free.

Friday June 16th, 2017 at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center, 6:00pm.

On Friday June 16th we will be holding a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner at the Heritage Discovery Center to honor all the volunteer efforts of our members. The dinner will begin at 6pm. There is no charge for this event for members, non-member guests will be $10 per person.

If you can attend, please RSVP by Monday June 12th to Leslie at ldnk@hotmail.com or call 901-0012 so we can plan on food and beverages.


June 1st at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center,  6:30pm - 8:30pm

Greg Gerstung, Vice President of the Niagara Frontier Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society! His program, "By Trolley to Olcott," is a proven crowd pleaser that highlights an underappreciated aspect of Buffalo history.

Doors open at 5:30 PM, presentation begins at 6:30 PM. The Museum will be open before, during, and after the presentation. Pizza, snacks and refreshments will be available. Admission is free.

Saturday, May 20th, 2017 at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center.
Festivities 6:00pm - 8:30pm

Join us this Friday, 5/12, for the opening of our newest exhibit, "Steel on Fire: Remembering the Bethlehem Steel Lackawanna Plant"! This exhibit will focus on remembering the Lackawanna Plant, as well as the devastating fire on November 9, 2016. It will serve as a memorial to the buildings lost to the flames, as well as a celebration of the memories still held by those in Lackawanna of the plant. The event runs from 6PM to 8:30PM. Light refreshments will be available, and we look forward to seeing you there! There is NO ADMISSION CHARGE!


May 20th at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center,  10:00am - 3:00pm

Join us on May 20th as the Western New York Genealogical Society (WNYGS) takes its member meeting on the road for a special "members only" talk and tour at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center Buffalo. In this special program hosted by The Buffalo Irish Genealogical Society - BIGS, WNYGS members will participate in a guided tour of the HDC Research Library and an afternoon of Irish research lectures. This program is free for WNYGS and BIGS members. Members can register online by visiting  "Members Only" Talk & Tour

         Our May Public Meeting will be held on Thursday, May 18th, 2017 at the Don Owens Center on the Heritage Discovery Campus located at 100 Lee Street in the City of Buffalo starting at 7:00pm.

Our program for May will take a look back at the Erie Railroad over the past 125 of it operations here in Western New York from 1851 to 1976 when the E-L was absorbed into Conrail. See photos of all the local Erie depots from Buffalo to Hornell, Salamanca and Niagara Falls. Plus great scenes of Erie Railroad action that you may not have seen from its beginning in 1851. With the opening of the line of the New York & Erie Railway from New York to Dunkirk, the Buffalo & Jamestown RR, and the Niagara Falls branch.

There is ample free parking and is open to the general public. Guests are always welcome.

May 3rd at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center,  6:30pm - 8:30pm

Join the Steel Plant Museum in welcoming Bob Synder, docent from the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens! Mr. Synder will be presenting "The History and Future of the Botanical Gardens."

April 22nd at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center,  10:00am - 4:00pm

The WESTERN NEW YORK RAILWAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY and the Heritage DiscoveRY Center of Buffalo, will be hosting its Second Annual Indoor Garage Sale at the Heritage Discovery Center on Saturday April 22, 2017 from 10am until 4pm. The event was a great success last year and is planned to become an annual event. If you have stuff you want to clean out of your closet, and/or garage, tables are just $10 or $8 for WNYRHS members. We will have about 20 tables available to rent.

Doors open at 8:30 AM, if the weather cooperates, perhaps even some table space in the parking lot.

Have proud Irish roots? Mark your calendars for the 2017 GATHERING OF THE CLANS: Genealogical Networking Seisiun sponsored by our friends from the Buffalo Irish Genealogical Society - BIGS. Help BIGS celebrate its 20th year (1997-2017) with genealogical displays by members, one-on-one help, a presentation, and light refreshments.There is NO ADMISSION CHARGE!


April 5th at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center,  6:30pm - 8:30pm

Join the Steel Plant Museum in welcoming Shane E. Stephenson, local author, who will be presenting selections from his book, "Buffalo's East Side Industry." Mr. Stephenson has done extensive research on this vital part of Buffalo history.

         Our March Public Meeting will be held on Thursday, March 16th, 2017 at the Don Owens Center on the Heritage Discovery Campus located at 100 Lee Street in the City of Buffalo starting at 7:00pm.

After a brief business meeting, including an update on recent developments at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center (HDC), our program will be from member Geno Dailey, covering a personal record-breaking 11-train cross-country Amtrak trip he completed in September 2016. Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase during the meeting, as will the 2017 Buffalo Railway Heritage calendars ($10). A 50-50 split club drawing to benefit the HDC will also be held.

There is ample free parking and is open to the general public. Guests are always welcome.

March 1st at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center,  6:30pm - 8:30pm

Join the Steel Plant Museum in welcoming Bill Donohue, as he speaks about Buffalo and the Civil War. Mr. Donohue is the author of "Himself: A Civil War Veteran's Struggle with Rebels, Brits, and Devils." This novel imagines the lives of Mr. Donohue's great grandfather and great uncle, veterans of the Civil War.

Doors open at 5:30 PM, presentation begins at 6:30 PM. The Museum will be open before, during, and after the presentation. Pizza, snacks and refreshments will be available. Admission is free.

Come celebrate Mardi Gras 2017, Saturday February 25th at the Don Owens Center on the HDC Campus located at 100 Lee Street in Buffalo.

Come and enjoy an evening in "The Big Easy" at the Heritage Discovery Center on Saturday, starting at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $25.00 and includes Cooking Instruction, a Mardi Gras history lesson, New Orleans style partying, Dinner, and of course, Beads! Our menu will include gumbo, red beans & rice, king cake, and hurricanes. Space is limited; to reserve your spot call Leslie at 716-901-0012.


Its time to for the WNYRHS 26th Annual Winter Train and Toy Show February 18th & 19th, 2017 at the Event Center on the Fairgrounds in Hamburg, New York.

         Our January Public Meeting and Multimedia Nite will be held on Thursday, January 19th, 2017 at the Don Owens Center on the Heritage Discovery Campus located at 100 Lee Street in the City of Buffalo starting at 7:00pm.

The first order of business will have the Trustee Nominating Committee present its report on the nominations for the Trustees, followed by the election. Then we will turn over the floor Gary Prophet, President of the Empire State Passengers Association will lead a discussion and answer questions about the various proposed sites for the new Amtrak Station in Buffalo. Following the Amtrak Station discussion our Program will be the Annual Members Image Night. With all the interest in a new Amtrak Station, I would encourage all participants to bring their favorite shots of Passenger trains, both old and new. We will have a regular slide projector and laptop & video projector available for use.

There is ample free parking and is open to the general public. Guests are always welcome.
