December 7th at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center.

The SPM welcomes Steve Cichon, a long time broadcaster, historian, and author to present "90 Years of Buffalo Radio and TV"! This multimedia presentation includes images, videos, sound bites, and more as Mr. Cichon weaves together the stories of stations, personalities, and memories. This talk is a proven crowd-pleaser!

Doors open at 5:30 PM, presentation begins at 6:30 PM. The Museum will be open before, during, and after the presentation. Pizza, snacks and refreshments will be available. Admission is free.

November 4th at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center.

Join us as we celebrate the opening of our new exhibit, A Fair Day's Work: The Role of the Union in the Steel Plants. This exhibit highlights the history of the United Steelworkers of America, the relationship between local unions and the steel companies, and the fascinating ways unions influenced the daily work of the plant.

Our opening reception will be held on November 4th, from 6 PM to 9 PM. Stop by for a look at the exhibit, to talk to our docents, and to enjoy some light refreshments! Admission is free.

November 2nd at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center.

Sandy Starks, the Director of Interpretive Programming at Forest Lawn Cemetery will be presenting "Art and Architecture of Forest Lawn," in which visitors will hear the stories behind many of the sculptures, monuments and statues that grace the beautiful grounds of Forest Lawn.

Doors open at 5:30 PM, presentation begins at 6:30 PM. The Museum will be open before, during, and after the presentation. Pizza, snacks and refreshments will be available. Admission is free.

October 5th at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center.

Join the SPM in welcoming Mark Lewandowski, who is in charge of tours and events at Buffalo Central Terminal! He will be presenting the history of this iconic Buffalo landmark, as well as discussing the ongoing efforts to restore this beautiful building back to how it was during its peak.

Doors open at 5:30 PM, presentation begins at 6:30 PM. The Museum will be open before, during, and after the presentation. Pizza, snacks and refreshments will be available. We'll also have a 50-50 split club drawing to benefit the Museum. Admission is free.

September 22nd - 24th at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center.

The 2016 PCRRHS Convention will take place in Buffalo, New York, on September 22nd - 24th. The convention will be held at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center, a museum complex and event venue owned by the WNYRHS and located adjacent to the joint CSX/NS/B&P rail corridor east of CP DRAW near downtown Buffalo. Tentative tours include Buffalo Center Terminal, the Buffalo Southern Railroad shops in Hamburg, the Railroad Museum of the Niagara Frontier, and the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority Metro-Rail Shops (located in the former Lackawanna terminal).


Our September Public Meeting will be held on Thursday the 22nd, 2016 at the Don Owens Center on the HDC Campus located at 100 Lee Street in the City of Buffalo starting at 6:00pm.

We'll have the hot dogs on the grill and cold refreshments waiting for you.

At 7:00pm, we will conduct a brief business meeting before we start our program. With the Penn Central Railroad Historical Society holding their Annual Convention here at the HDC, what better way to celebrate than to look back on the railroads that created the PC.

There is ample free parking and is open to the general public. Guests are always welcome.


Wednesday September 7th, 2016 at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center.

On September 7th, Join the Steel Plant Museum in welcoming Lee Gearhart, a member of the Steel Plant Museum, who has worked for over 33 years at Moog Inc., will present "Cool Things About Metals." This talk will feature show-and-tell pieces from his time at Moog and interesting characteristics and features he has noticed over the years. Pizza and refreshments will be available. Our First Wednesday series are FREE!


August 13 at 12:30pm - 3:30pm at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center.
Doors open at 12:30pm. Admission is $3.00 at the door.

On August 13th, To celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the end of World War II, the Steel Plant Museum will be hosting a Rosie the Riveter Rally! We will be joined by The Buffalo Dolls, and some real life Rosies! Come out and celebrate their hard work to secure our freedom! Please wear your best Rosie outfit! We will be sending in photos of our Rosie look-a-likes to the American Rosie the Riveter Association! Pizza and refreshments will be available.


Wednesday August 3rd, 2016 at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center.

On August 3rd, Join the Steel Plant Museum in welcoming A representative of the New York Power Authority (NYPA) will discuss the construction of the Robert Moses Niagara Power Project and NYPA's operations across New York State. Pizza and refreshments will be available. Our First Wednesday series are FREE!


         Our July Public Meeting and Picnic will be held on Saturday July 23rd, 2016 at the Don Owens Center on the Heritage Discovery Campus located at 100 Lee Street in the City of Buffalo starting at 6:00pm.

Starting at 6pm, we'll have the hot dogs on the grill waiting for you. For just $10, you get the Picnic Special which includes two hot dogs with all the fixings and your choice of two sides (Green Salad, Cole Slaw or Macaroni Salad). After a brief business meeting, as is our tradition, our program for the evening will be videos of varying railroad subject from old railroad publicity films from the 20's, 30's 40's and 50's. In addition if you have a favorite video that you have or even filmed yourself, please bring it along to show. We'll have our video projector and a laptop to play your DVD on, as well as a VHS player for those oldies but goodies.

There is ample free parking and is open to the general public. Guests are always welcome.

the Buffalo Irish Genealogical Society with hold their quarterly meeting. A short business meeting will be followed by autosomal DNA discussions. Please bring yours along and join in the conversations!

On July 6th, Join the Steel Plant Museum in welcoming Walter Gordon, President of the Board at the Niagara Aerospace Museum! The Niagara Aerospace Museum is committed to preserving the history of aviation in Western New York. Pizza and refreshments will be available. Our First Wednesday series are FREE!

On June 1st, The SPM will welcome Joe Jakubik of International Chimney and the Buffalo Lighthouse Association! Mr. Jakubik will share stories of his work at International Chimney, where special projects have included moving historic lighthouses and roundhouses. Pizza and refreshments will be available. Our First Wednesday series are FREE!


May 21st, 2016 at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center.
Saturday - 10:00am - 5:00pm.

Please join us for the 2nd Annual Steelfest! This event will take place in the parking lot of the Heritage DiscoveRY Center Buffalo. Local craftsmen and cultural organizations will be setting up tables with information and goods for sale. The event will also feature Lloyd's Taco Truck and the unveiling of our new exhibit.


         Our May Public Meeting will be held on Thursday May 19th, 2016 at the Don Owens Center on the Heritage Discovery Campus located at 100 Lee Street in the City of Buffalo starting at 7:00pm.
After a brief business meeting, our program will be from member Geno Dailey covering a cross-country Amtrak trip he completed in October 2015. Geno will take us on a five different Amtrak Train adventure exploring his stops along the way. There is ample free parking and is open to the general public. Guests are always welcome!

Join us as local author Timothy Bohen tells the story of Buffalo's First Ward! Bohen, author of Against the Grain, will talk on Irish immigration to Buffalo, the waterfront, grain elevators, and much more. Pizza, snacks and refreshments will be available. We'll also have a 50-50 split club drawing to benefit the Museum. Bring or purchase the book to have it signed by the author himself!

Want to learn more about your Irish ancestors? Stuck somewhere researching your family tree? Come to one of The Buffalo Irish Genealogical Society - BIGS's Irish Genealogy Sessions at the Heritage Discovery Center (100 Lee Street) for our Ireland 2016 commemoration. What better time to learn about your own families history? We'll help you get started researching your family tree. Or direct you to helpful resourcesif you're stuck somewhere in your research. And you might even be able to find out what the original Irish Gaelic form your Irish surname is and what it actually means!

Buffalo Irish Genealogical Society (BIGS) sponsors a "Gathering of the Clans" at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center to showcase personal genealogies of BIGS members. Wonderful displays with pictures and family heirlooms are open to the public and members will answer questions and give free advice. A small book sale is usually held with FREE REFRESHMENTS AND NO ADMISSION CHARGE!

Join us to hear a fascinating presentation on the differences a century can make! Chuck LaChuisa, a prominent local historian who runs the website www.buffaloah.com, "Buffalo Architecture and History," will be giving his new talk on "Buffalo Buildings: Then (1916) & Now (2016)." Pizza and refreshments will be available. We'll also have a 50-50 split club drawing to benefit the Museum. Our First Wednesday series are FREE!


Saturday, April 2nd, 2016 at 10:00am - 4:00pm at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center.

Please join us for our second Spring Garage and Bake Sale to raise funds for the museum. Tables will be available to rent in our meeting room for $10 per table and if the weather cooperates, out-door space in the parking lot behind the HDC will be available for rent as well. Contact Leslie at 716-901-0012 for further in-formation and to reserve your space. Also, call Leslie to donate your favorite baked goods for the sale or to volunteer to help out at the museum.


         Our March Public Meeting will be held on Thursday March 17th, 2016 at the Don Owens Center on the Heritage Discovery Campus located at 100 Lee Street in the City of Buffalo starting at 7:00pm.

After a brief business meeting Doug and Polly Smith are moving after nearly 50 years on Grand Island. They leave to take up residence closer to family, in Cortland, NY, about 200 yards from a spur of the old DL&W. As a farewell, Doug is assembling one final show. Count on a few overseas adventures, a lot of Erie-Lackawanna, some Canadian Pacific and of course a few surprises. With Doug, you never knows what's coming next.

There is ample free parking and is open to the general public. Guests are always welcome.

You can also renew your membership for the coming year at the meeting and see all the new additions to the museum displays.

Join the Steel Plant Museum in welcoming John Dumbroski as he talks about the Spillman Motor Company! Mr. Dumbroski will explain how the Allan Herschell and the Spillman Brothers came together to form the Herschell-Spillman Company, one of the leading companies in manufacturing carrousels and amuseument rides. Pizza and refreshments will be available. We'll also have a 50-50 split club drawing to benefit the Museum. Our First Wednesday series is FREE! Entrance to the museum is FREE!


Saturday, February 27th, 2016 at 6:00pm at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center.

The WNYRHS will be hosting a "Volunteer Appreciation Dinner" which will be held at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center. Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm. Saturday February 28th, 2016. It's a big thank you to all our hardworking volunteers. Please R.S.V.P. by Tuesday February 23rd. Hope to see you there and Thank you!


         Our January Public Meeting will be held on Thursday January 21st, 2016 at the Don Owens Center on the Heritage Discovery Campus located at 100 Lee Street in the City of Buffalo starting at 7:00pm.

After a brief business meeting and the annual election of Trustees, as is our tradition, our program will be presented by you and other members. It's our annual Member's Photo Night where we invite you to show off a selection of your favorite slides, digital images or videos. We will have a laptop and video projector available, as well as a slide projector for your use. We always say bring your favorite 40 shots, but if you have more, feel free to bring them along.

There is ample free parking and is open to the general public. Guests are always welcome.

You can also renew your membership for the coming year at the meeting and see all the new additions to the museum displays.
