The "A2" Class 4-6-0 type steam locomotive, was an express passenger locomotive entirely designed and built by the Victorian Railways, operating from 1907 to 1963. More Information.
A2 986 is owned by Steamrail Victoria. Once on display at a park reserve in Warragul, it has now been restored. Last sighted 26th May 2024 Up Pass leading K153 (pulling), with S301 and T356 trailing (pushing), departing Ballarat station.
D3 619 is owned by the Bendigo City Council and is currently stored at Bendigo locomotive depot (SSR) yard sidings. It is unclear what is planned for this locomotive.
D3 639 is owned and operated by Steamrail Victoria. Originally D3 658, it took the number D3 639 due to replacing it as the commissioner's locomotive.

D3 658 is owned and operated by Steamrail Victoria. Last sighted 15th September 2007 Up Pass, leaving Caulfield station on a steamrail charter special.
"G" Class
The "G" Class 2-6-0+0-6-2 type narrow guage 'Garratt' steam locomotives where built by Beyer, Peacock & Company, Manchester, England for Victoria's 4 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow guage railways (Croydon to Warburton, Wangaratta to Whitfield, Upper Ferntree Gully to Gembrook, Colac to Beech Forest). 2 were built and numbered G41 and G42. G41 was scrapped and G42 is now owned and operated by Puffing Billy Railway and used on their Belgrave to Gembrook line. H220, known as 'Heavy Harry' is owned by AHRS (Australian Historical Railway Society) and is on static display in their North Williamstown railway museum. As its name implies, this was the heaviest steam locomotive in operation in Victoria. It was only used on certain lines as it was spreading track and sagging bridges.
"J" Class
The 1st series of "J" Class steam locomotives (J500 - J529) were coal fired. The 2nd series of "J" Class steam locomotives (J530 - J559) were oil fired.
J512 is owned by the Seymour Railway Heritage Centre and is currently under long term restoration. As part of the restoration the locomotive is also to be converted to standard guage. Last sighted 10th November 2024 stored, Seymour Railway Heritage Centre storage yards.
J515 is owned by the Seymour Railway Heritage Centre (SRHC). Last sighted 10th November 2024 stored under overhaul, Seymour Railway Heritage Centre yard sidings.
J536, once on static display at Colac station, is now stored at Newport workshops pending possible restoration. It is owned by Seven-0-Seven Operations Inc.
Last sighted 12th February 2005 trailing T376, T413, a brake van and 2 pass cars, leading a louvre van, 863M-1632T-864M, 869M-1635T-870M X'Trapolis EMU Sets and a brake van, on an up special passing Ballarat East, being transferred to Melbourne.

K140 is actually K153 which was renumbered as K100. K100 was renumbered K140 in its later working life. It is owned and operated by Steamrail Victoria.

K174's frame is being used with parts of other locomotives by Mornington Railway to rebuild this locomotive. When it is finished it will retain it's number but will be named 'City of Ararat'.
K177 is a composite locomotive built to replace K159 taken from this site at Hamilton by Mornington Railway for parts. This locomotive now consists of parts of K177, K174, and K159. The frame being K177's.

K190 features 'crimson' red livery. It is owned by VicTrack and operated by Steamrail Victoria. "NA" Class
The "NA" Class 2-6-2 type narrow guage steam locomotives where originally referred to as 'narrow gauge', later abbreviated to NA Class. These locomotives operated on all of Victoria's 4 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow guage railways (Croydon to Warburton, Wangaratta to Whitfield, Upper Ferntree Gully to Gembrook, Colac to Beech Forest), as required. 1A and 2A were built by Baldwin Locomotive Works (USA) with the remaining 15 units built at Newport workshops. 6 surviving units are owned and operated by Puffing Billy Railway and used on their Belgrave to Gembrook line. 1711 was built in 1926 for the Metropolitan Gas Company. It is now owned and operated by Puffing Billy Railway.
Last sighted 12th January 2006 Up Pass pulling, with D21 pushing, running into Emerald station (Puffing Billy Railway), covered with a fibreglass body masquerading as "(1) Thomas The Tank Engine" (pictured), for Puffing Billy Railway's "Day out with Thomas" attraction.
"R" Class
The original "R" Class steam locomotives, referred to as "Old R", were 0-6-0 locomotives built around the 1880s by various companies including Bayer Peacock, Pheonix Foundry Ballarat and a Belgian firm, eventually altogether assigned road numbers 300 - 350 in 1923. The new 'R' class locomotive was introduced to replace the aging A2 class steam locomotives. 70 locomotives were built by the North British Locomotive Company Limited of Glasgow, Scotland and assigned road numbers 700 - 769. Of these, only 7 were not scrapped.
R700 is owned by Steamrail Victoria and currently stored with no future plans for restoration. It is pictured cosmetically restored for the Steamrail Victoria, Newport Workshops open days, 2024.

R766 is owned by Hunter Valley Tourist Railway. It is (pictured) undergoing conversion at Newport workshops to standard gauge for use with the Hunter Valley Tourist Railway in New South Wales. Last sighted 18th March 2006 stabled, Steamrail open day Newport workshops.
Y112, once on static display outside the Civic Center in Ballarat, is owned by Sovereign Hill Museums Association and operated by Steamrail Victoria. Last sighted 11th March 2024 stored (under overhaul), Steamrail Victoria workshops, Steamrail Victoria, Newport Workshops open days, Newport.
Z526 was the only Z class locomotive built. Once converted to a steam crane, it was rebuilt back to a tank locomotive. It usually resides at the "Scienceworks" Museum, Spotswood.
