"Peg Leg"

One of the strangest railways was known as the "Peg Leg" for its monorail type of construction.
It ran between the GTR Ridgeway station 1 1/2 miles to Crystal Beach Amusement Park.
Although the park itself and its rides including a train, were around for decades the
Peg Leg was short-lived 1896-1898 not making enough money to sustain it.

This minature park train was built c.1905 by the famous Allan Herschell Company, North Tonawanda, NY.
It first operated on Toronto Island for many years after which George Cooper brought it to Nepean where it operated for several years in Britannia Park. He then moved it to Orillia (c.1958-1998) where it continued operating for many years under the auspices of the Rotary Club in Couchiching Beach Park until its age and boiler condition caused its retirement. Replaced by a wider gauge "steam" appearance train. It then went back home to its origin. The Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum located on the original site.
