GP16 Paint Information

 

Paint Schemes received when rebuilt:

• Units 4600 – 4605 when rebuilt into GP16’s received Family Lines Paint.
• Units 4606 – 4644, 4700 – 4801, 4975 - 4977 received Family Lines Paint in Waycross Ga Shops after they where rebuilt into GP16’s in Tampa Fla
• Units 4645, 4802 – 4809, 4978, 4979 Received Seaboard System Paint at Waycross Ga Shops and never wore Family Lines paint as a GP16.

 

Roster by Paint Schemes

• Family Lines paint :

150 GP16’s received Family Lines Paint. 4600 – 4644, 4700 – 4801 and 4975 – 4977.

 

• Seaboard System Paint:

18 GP16’s received SBD paint: 4628, 4634, 4645, 4740, 4758, 4760, 4770, 4794, 4802, 4803, 4804, 4805, 4806, 4807, 4808, 4809, 4978, and 4979.

 

• CSX Paint:
39 GP16’s were painted in CSX paint. 1700, 1705, 1711, 1719, 1726, 1727, 1731, 1733, 1740, 1745, 1746, 1748, 1749, 1750, 1753, 1756, 1757, 1759, 1770, 1771, 1778, 1788, 1792, 1794, 1797, 1798, 1799, 1801, 1804, 1816, 1819, 1821, 1822, 1834 1837, 1841, 1842, 1854, and 1860.

 

Repaints

• Seaboard System Paint – 7 GP16’s were repainted into the SBD paint scheme bringing the total number of GP16’s to 18. The 7 repaints were: 4628, 4634, 4740, 4758, 4760, 4770, 4794.

 

• CSX Stripe Paint Scheme – No GP16’s were painted in this scheme. This scheme was applied from about April 1986 – October 1987. The first applications in April of 1986 included the words Transportation on the long hood. The 5508, a GE B30-7, actually had the word Transportation on the sides of the long hood and nose and rear for a short time. Sample of CSX Stripe Scheme

 

• CSX Blue Bottom Paint Scheme - There were 13 units painted in this scheme: 1705, 1711, 1733, 1745, 1750, 1753, 1757, 1788, 1798, 1819, 1821, 1834, and 1841. This scheme was applied from about October 1987 to about October 1988.

 

• CSX Gray Ghost Paint Scheme - There were 26 units painted in this scheme: 1700, 1719, 1726, 1727, 1731, 1740, 1746, 1748, 1749, 1756, 1759, 1770, 1771, 1778, 1792, 1794, 1797, 1799, 1801, 1804, 1816, 1822, 1837, 1842, 1854, and 1860. Gray Ghost scheme was used from about October 1988 to September 1989

 

• CSX YN1 – No GP16’s were painted in this scheme. This scheme was used from September 1989 to March 1990. CSX YN1 Paint Scheme sample

 

• CSX YN2 – No GP16’s were painted in this scheme.  CSX adopted the YN2 Paint scheme in March 1990.  Some of the first units to receive this scheme were CSX B36-7’s 5864, 5895 and 5923. CSX YN2 Paint sample.

Family Lines Paint Date Information

Source of paint dates listed below came from information applied to each individual GP16. Information was collected while I was out track side. 

 

• SCL 4614 painted Family Lines “Ptd A WX 5-79 Imron Gray” triple checked 01/01/1991 in Baldwin Fla. Interesting note is roster shows SCL 4614 built 10/02/1979. This really threw me, but after some digging I discovered that although already rebuilt in 5/79 SCL officially retired the 1044 on 9/25/1979. The 1044 became SCL 4614 officially on 10/02/1979.  Source of built date and retired date was SCL Diesel Data Book dated 01/11/1980.  Earliest photo I have seen was a photo taken June 11, 1979 by Joe Oats, showing the 1044 already converted into a GP16 and painted Family Lines. Photo is in Diesel Era July/August 1994 issue.

 

• SCL 4617 painted Family Lines “Ptd A WX 12-79 Imron Gray” checked CSX 1717 8/26/1990 in Jacksonville Fla., and again on 12/15/1990 in Baldwin Fla.

 

• SCL 4621 painted Family Lines “Ptd A WX 5/80 Imron Gray” Checked CSX 1721 on 9/30/1990 in Baldwin Fla.

 

• SCL 4624 painted Family Lines “Ptd A WX 10/80 Imron Gray” checked CSX 1724 on 9/08/1990 in Baldwin Fla.

 

• SCL 4629 painted Family Lines “Ptd ? WX 5-81” checked 8/26/1990 in Jacksonville Fla. I could not read if it was Ptd A or C
