McCloud: Servicing Facilities

Any operating railroad needs some way to service its locomotives. The McCloud River Railroad built such a structure adjacent to the McCloud shop building shortly after it was built to replace the earlier facilities used to service the steam fleet. |

The old steam servicing facilities, including a sand house and sand tower, still in use next to the new shop building in 1957. A close examination of the photo shows that construction on the new diesel facilities has begun- note the new steel framework rising to the left of the wooden buildings. By 1959 the first sand tower for the diesel era was up and operational. The hopper to the right supplied sand to the tower, and the sand car on the left kept the hopper filled. MR #503 served as the original sand car from around 1958 until around 1972, when the body was re-mounted onto flat car #821. Around 1977 the railroad created a second sand car by mounting another tank car body on flat car #823 and the hopper came down. Sand car #503 is seen in this photo by Ed Burggraf. |

The original sanding tower did not last long. Within a decade the railroad replaced it with this structure...note that the support beams on both sides are made out of rail. Sand car #821 is spotted next to the tower. The small shed on the right holds the pumping equipment to re-fuel the locomotives. Drew Toner photograph, taken in 1986. |

McCloud, CA, 6/1992. The #39 sits underneath the sanding tower in the McCloud yard. Notice that two of the three supports are cut off above ground level. A few weeks before this picture was taken a flat car loaded with pipe got away from a crew working in the yard and rolled down under the sanding tower, snapping both of these supports off as it went. Around 1993 the railroad built the blue hopper seen here to replace the last sand car. Photo is by Peter Ely and is from the Drew Toner collection. |
