The naming convention of The East Coast Champion
Newsletter was derived as follows: On December 1, 1939, the
Atlantic Coast Line (ACL) and the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railroad
launched the all-coach "(The) Champion" streamliner service
between New York and Florida. The President of the ACL at the
time was named Champion McDowell Davis, however, that is not where the
train got its name. The ACL sponsored a contest which was won by
Betty Creighton, a secretary from Pittsburgh, who christened the
"(The) Champion" at Washington, DC during its maiden
southbound voyage.
