Back to the RiTB main page

My nice garage...

L-shaped room of generous dimensions (39m2, 9 x 3m, plus 4 x 3m), now well insulated and heated ... And now, what are we doing?

Wartegg (WTG) (Bauma)

Considering the dimensions, which are now sufficient to "see big", the project "Sihlwald" started to look ... frankly small in this huge garage. The available length of 9m (8m without curves at both ends) corresponds in HO to almost 700m in reality. It would have been a fair bit to replicate the main train station in Zürich, but for a small station of a Swiss branch line as I like them ... As well as I have a collection of traction and rolling equipment perfectly heterogeneous, a part "railway museum" would be welcome to justify for example a brazilian engine (Yes, I really have one in my collection!) in front of a train not including two cars of the same type nor the same country nor of the same era...

A possibility appeared quite quickly:
Bauma!

Bauma is located on the line Winterthur - Rüti (Tösstal Line) of the Swiss Federal Railways, currently operated by Thurbo. It is also the terminus of the historical line of the DVZO (Dampfbahn-Verein Zürcher Oberland, Steam railway society of the Zürcher highlands) coming from Hinwil. There is regional traffic (every hour: 1 Winterthur-Bauma and 1 Winterthur-Bauma-Rüti service), a fairly lean freight traffic (1 local freight train a day ... and again, I think that it has been deleted since!), and especially on weekends the historic trains of the DVZO.

Schematic track plan before the works of 2012. In black: electrified tracks SBB. In gray: Non-electrified tracks DVZO

From the point of view of dimensions, no problem: Bauma is about 450m long between the two entry points, which is about 5.5m in HO, while I have 9m available. It's comfortable...

It still had to rework some details:
Reworked track plan:

The differences of the station Wartegg compared to the actual Bauma station will be:

Hürlimatt (HUER)

Hürlimatt is simply a "hidden" garage, an uncovered track yard.
It is still the reuse of the first two modules of my network Wädenswil (see "A little history") dating from a little over 25 years ago ...

Maxalp (MAX)

Maxalp is a small local train station with a passing track, a siding and a short stablng (eg Brunnadern-Neckertal on the Wattwil-St.Gallen line). It is also supposed to be the terminus for historic trains from Wartegg

The name "Maxalp" is in honor of Maïtre Maximilien de la Gare, also called "Max". You do not know Max? Here it is, on my old layout of Hinwil: Max and the shunter

Leuwylen (LW)

Leuwylen is a small industrial area located at the exit of Wartegg, Maxalp side.

And finally...

Starting from Wartegg in a clockwise direction, the trains will go through:
- The Leuwylen industrial zone (Leuwylen modules 1 and 2)
- The Tunnel 2 and Tunnel 1 modules (which will be integrated in a shelf)
- The Maxalp station
- The Curve and the bridge of Chatzegg
- The Hürlimatt yard (which will eventually also be integrated in a shelf), and the removable bridge giving access to the layout
- The Urtobel curve (possibly fitted with a metal bridge between two tunnels hiding the tight curves), passing over my workbench
- The 2 modules Altlandenberg 2 and 1
- And back to the starting point: Wartegg station

Also visible on the map (blue dotted line): a possible tram or cogwheel railway linking Wartegg to Urtobel, with also a possible reproduction of the Wartau tramway depot (former site of the tram museum in Zürich)
