CSX Greenwich Yard Philadelphia PA February 16 2016
Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus made its annual visit to Philadelphia last month. Coming up from Greensboro NC with NS power, CSX added a pair of its engines in the front of the Blue Unit at Alexandria and recrewed at Baltimore to complete the trip north.
Under a leaden sky, a silver snake meets a black snake: a yard job with an oil train consist mimics the circus train as both head into the yard.
Look for changes in the make up of the circus trains in May 2016 when, in an unusual move, both are presumed to be heading back to home base where the COFC flats will reportedly be swapped out for a five car articulated spine flat ...
and the elephants are definitely retiring to Florida (as everyone eventually does), so some of these cars will be put out to pasture.
Speaking of pasture, now that CP has pulled out of Philadelphia, it doesn't look like the rails along Delaware Avenue get used much, certainly as compared to twenty years ago and thirteen years ago. One of the reasons the rails are still there is because the Oregon Avenue connection to Hyundai-Rotem was cut and the plant can only be serviced via the Delaware Avenue branch just north of Mifflin.
After the flats were cut off to unload at the west end, the train pulled east just short of the Walt Whitman Bridge, cutting off the hotel cars which were parked in two strings on the east end near the CSX intermodal yard along Pattison Avenue. Power for the CSX portion of the trip was CSX ES44AC-H 3179, CSX SD40-3 4031, NS D9-44CW 9866 and NS C40-9W 9161.
