Part 3.  Sunday in San Diego.

The morning low cloudiness from the ocean made even light for photography.

Sunday morning, we awoke to the smell of freshly-brewed coffee.  After a shower, we prepared to take Doug to beakfast at the nearby

The Grand Central Cafe is the closest place for a full breakfast to the Santa Fe Station.  If you want coffee, pastries, or sandwiches, there is a deli in the station proper (where we had a sandwich before we returned Sunday evening).  The Grand Central Cafe is at 500 W. Broadway, only one block east on Broadway from the station.  (619) 234-2233

At the corner of Broadway and India Streets, the Grand Central Cafe requires a few steps to get to it.

You can also enter by way of the 500 West Hotel (below), which has a few less steps, then left off the lobby is an entrance.

Built in 1924 as an Army-Navy YMCA, it has nautical crests outside.  There is still a YMCA connection of some kind, but the 500 West Hotel uses most. if not all, the rooms.  Rates for a Saturday night room with 2 queen beds is $79 as of this writing.

Their French toast is like the original Santa Fe French Toast.

Balboa Park has 31 Attractions listed in the map available on the free Tram, including the world famous San Diego Zoo, so there is no need to go anywhere else if you have a free day in San Diego.

Our plan for Sunday was to go to Balboa Park.  We found that Bus 7 from near the Grand Central Cafe on Broadway would take us right to the park.  We learned later that we could have taken Bus 2 from closer to the Pacific Sands spot and transfer to Bus 7 along Broadway and return the reverse set of routes.  We boarded prepared for the $2.25 fare, but learned from the driver that Seniors were $1.

The bus dropped us off near the San Diego Air and Space Museum and we learned from some other park visitors that at Inspiration Point, a few steps east, there was a free tram to the museums.

Balboa Park, built for a World's Fair, has beautiful architecture throughout.

There are so many choices of museums to see in Balboa Park in San Diego, it is hard to narrow it down to what you really want to see.  We decided on the Museum of Photographic Arts first, followed by the Model Railroad Museum.  At the Depot, we had picked up booklets titled, "101 Things to do in San Diego."  There were a number of $1 off coupons within this booklet.  However, before entering a museum, ask the ticket seller which is best, the $1 off or AAA or, if it applies, Senior.

After the Photographic Arts Museum, we walked downstairs to the San Diego Model Railroad Museum.

Next, we met a friend from Anaheim, Don Drummer, at the Spreckels Organ Pavillion for an outdoor concert.  Sunday concerts start at 2 p.m.

We walked past the Air & Space Museum, learning about the jet that had pontoons.

Planes pass so close to the museum when landing at the San Diego Airport, that they seem part of the museum.

We decided to end our day at Balboa Park with a visit to the Automotive Museum.

They have a nice and varied collection of automobiles.  They were featuring law enforcement vehicles.  One wall was mirrored allowing you to photograph both the front and back of some cars (above).
