1999 Summer Vacation Railfanning Trip

Amsterdam, New York: July 22nd, 1999:

Thursday, July 22nd, 1999:

About 7:00am, I was given a ride by a couple friends back to the Amtrak Station. The people I trainwatched with had been there since 11:00pm, the previous night, and had recorded a good amount of freight traffic passing the station. Below, and on the next couple pages, are photos of all the trains that came by...

To start off the day, Westbound CSX Train SEBU with Ex-Con C40-8W #7348 (Former CR #6164) leading 2 CSX units passes by on Track #2 at 7:32am.
The first Amtrak Train in daylight passing the station would be Train #284, the Mohawk, with P32AC-DM #700 on the lead at 9:06am. What was so neat for me, being from Buffalo, is the fact that I was able to photograph this train in daylight, since it passes through Buffalo somewhere near 5:00am, so there's no chance to see it in daylight on that end of the state.
The next freight was CSX Train TV-13 with Conrail SD60 #6860 on the lead at 9:37am. This unit's future identity will be CSX #8717.
Westbound TV-261 passes by the station with CSX SD40-2 #8458 leading on Track #2 at 10:13am. With its share of Conrail's SD40-2's, CSX will roster nearly 500 SD40-2's. These units have seen a lot of action on the Chicago Line since June 1st.
Since June 1st, a scene like the one in the above photo is becoming increasingly rare, Solid, Unrenumbered Conrail Power!!!! Today, CSX Train TV-9 sported Conrail C40-8W #6089 on the lead, sometime in the future, this unit will become CSX #7316. The train is seen on Track #2 at 10:55am.
It's scenes like this that make Amsterdam such a great place to trainwatch!!! Passing by the beautiful Mohawk River, is CSX Train IHSE with C40-8W #7881 on Track #1 at 10:57am.
Next up, is Amtrak Train #63, the Toronto-bound Maple Leaf making its station stop in Amsterdam at 11:05am. This train still sports F40PH power, today with unit #228, but this is expected to change within the next few months, from what I've heard.
Sneaking up on me at about 70mph, is Amtrak's Train #48, The Lake Shore Limited, speeding its way past the Amsterdam Station on Track #1 at 1:32pm. The Lake Shore Limited doesn't regularly stop in Amsterdam, passengers would have to either board in Schenectady or Utica to ride the Lake Shore, but its always fun to photograph this train rounding the bend next to the river passing the station...
