Christmas Shopping Amtrak Trip 2010
 Trip Planning:

I booked this trip less than 2 weeks before my last trip back in October would begin. I decided I wanted to ride Train #48 - The Lake Shore Limited from Buffalo to Schenectady, NY on Friday, December 17th, 2010. The plan was to pick up a rental car from Enterprise Rent-A-Car for the weekend and stay at a Courtyard By Marriott hotel. The initial purpose for this trip is to do my Christmas shopping and get in some good railfanning in the Capital Region. I also wanted to visit the site of one of my favorite TV shows on this trip which would involve a "road trip" down to Newburgh, NY to visit Orange County Choppers which as you may know is the subject of the show "American Chopper" on the Discovery Channel! I planned to ride Amtrak Empire Service Train #281 home on Monday, December 20th, 2010. The total cost of the Amtrak tickets was $88.00. The key word here is "plan" as the plans would end up changing on the morning of the trip as you'll soon see!!!

 Friday, December 17th, 2010:

On Friday morning, shortly after midnight, a quick look at Amtrak.com showed that Train #48 hadn't departed Chicago yet! This train was supposed to leave Chicago on Thursday night at 9:30pm local time. Train #48 ended up not departing Chicago until 12:41am Central Time, over 3 hours late! Amtrak.com had stated the train was estimated to make up time along the route so I was only slightly concerned about my arrival in Schenectady because I have the rental car reserved with Enterprise and they close at 6pm. By around 2am, the train was scheduled to get into Schenectady around 4pm which would otherwise have given me enough time to get the car and be on my way. Now here is where Amtrak really went the extra mile for a passenger: At approximately 5:30am, I received a phone call from an Amtrak representative stating that Train #48 was severely behind schedule (which I already knew) and wanted to know if I would be interested in switching to Empire Service Train #284 since it was on time (that train originates out of Niagara Falls, NY). Considering the ramifications that would occur if I missed picking up the rental car, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and switch trains. Since Amtrak called me and made the offer, there was no charge to change trains! I had thought about doing this myself once I originally learned of the lateness of Train #48 and was able to get a reservation on Train #284, but the cost was $78.00 (I paid $44.00 for my ticket on #48 back in October). This would be a moot point since Amtrak offered me the switch so it didn't cost anything extra! I drove out to the Amtrak Buffalo-Depew Station after a quick stop to Wal-Mart to pick up some new luggage locks and parked the car in the long-term lot. I headed inside the station and had my ticket switched to Train #284 and would spend a few minutes inside the station chatting with a couple other passengers. Around 7:20am, I ventured out onto the platform in the freezing cold to get ready to photograph the train. The platform at Buffalo-Depew Station has received some upgrades thanks to money spent from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Stimulus Money). Among the upgrades were new platform edging to make the yellow line more visible along with a new shelter for the wheelchair lift as well as new signage along the platform. At approximately 7:35am, Train #284 arrived at Buffalo-Depew Station. The consist for today's train is shown below:

After a quick photo, I boarded the train in Amfleet I Coach #82033. This is a refurbished coach with the Capstone interior and the car was in good shape. I was in the second to last coach in the train as the last coach (where I boarded), was just about full! I knew when I booked this trip that it would likely have a decent sized crowd being that it's a week before Christmas! We left Buffalo-Depew Station at 7:44am running 10 minutes late. We passed one freight just after leaving Depew. One thing I noticed was that we were kicking up a fair amount of snow! I took a quick walk through the train to take down car numbers, then went back to the cafe car and had a quick breakfast of a Sausage, Egg & Cheese on an English Muffin sandwich with a cinnamon roll and a Diet Pepsi, all were tasty! Together they cost $8.00. I chatted briefly with the crew then went back to my coach to pick up my laptop and set it up in the cafe car to show a member of the crew this web site! An announcement was made just before our next stop at Rochester that we would have a big crowd boarding there so I opted to just set up the computer at my coach seat and work on this travelogue there since I didn't want to risk losing my seat like what happened to me on one of these trips a few years ago. We arrived at our next station stop of Rochester, NY at 8:36am. A very large crowd boarded there and we were on our way at 8:42am, now 15 minutes late. The coach I was in was now really starting to fill up! The crew wasn't kidding when they said this train was sold out! Things would be uneventful as we eventually made our way to our next stop at Syracuse. At 10:01am, we arrived at Syracuse Station and was greeted by what looked like at least 100 people boarding the train there! I got off the train to get a picture and would patiently wait to reboard. We left Syracuse at 10:10am, now running 20 minutes late.
Upon leaving Syracuse, we had a rather lengthy speed restriction for unknown reasons. I also now had a passenger sitting next to me. I let her have my window seat since I've covered this route more times than I can count over the years! She was a college student from Albany who was on her way home for Christmas. A passenger a few seats up from where I was sitting was playing music from the band "Evanescence". She said she was a music and art fan, and Evanescence is a cool band (if you ask me)! We made our next stop at Rome, NY and left there at 10:53am, 22 minutes late. Only a few people got on and off at that stop. At our next stop of Utica, NY, we would end up having another absolutely massive crowd board there! I got off the train and ran up to the head end to get another picture and would see one CSX Freight pass us there. I also got photos of the nice New York Central Steam Locomotive on display at the station as well. We left Utica with a nearly full train at 11:17am, running 28 minutes late. I've gotta give the crew a lot of credit here, as they handled the crowds very well and the overall sentiment on the train was that people were generally happy! Now try finding that kind of sentiment in an airport at this time of the year! I headed to the cafe car to have a quick lunch. If there was one thing I really missed was the fact that had I been on Train #48, I would have had lunch in the dining car, oh well, there's always next year! I ended up chatting with a couple passengers in my coach and discussed my web site a bit. We picked up a few people at our next station stop of Amsterdam, NY. I noticed a new sign on the platform letting you know you are at this station along with a new shelter for the wheelchair lift unit. We left Amsterdam at 12:20pm, 31 minutes late. I sat at my coach seat and just after passing CP-169, I started to get my stuff together and drag my luggage down to the other end of my coach. At 12:37pm, running 28 minutes late, we arrived at my stop of Schenectady, NY.
One of the first things I noticed after getting off the train was the serious amount of graffiti painted on the station platform structures. I hope this is something that can be cleaned up because it really doesn't look good to a passenger arriving there! I took the elevator down to the station waiting room. A friend of mine would pick me up eventually and we went over to Subway where another friend eventually met up with us. I would go pick up my rental car for this year's trip at Enterprise Rent-A-Car after lunch. This time, I got a 2011 Hyundai Sonata, nice car!!! This car was navy blue in color and was able to get out of its own way (I am a very conservative driver but I like it when you press the gas pedal and the car takes off, it's more fun to drive than a car where you press the gas pedal and just crawl)! It reminds me a lot of my personal vehicle, a Honda Accord! After picking up the rental car, I visited with one of my friends at another deli in Schenectady before eventually driving to my hotel for this trip, the Courtyard By Marriott on Washington Avenue in Albany, across the street from the University of Albany. After getting checked in to the hotel, I decided to take a nap since I had been running all day on very little sleep thanks to the alternate arrangement of taking Train #284 over #48. This would turn out to be the smartest decision in this trip as #48 would end up arriving at Schenectady that day at 6:12pm which would have meant I would have missed picking up my rental car altogether on Friday because Enterprise closed at 6pm! Again, THANK YOU AMTRAK for calling me at some insane hour of the night to offer me the train switch!!! This trip would have been severely complicated had that not happen! After attempting a nap which was largely useless, I drove over to Dorato's, a local restaurant in Albany and had their hot chicken wings "Dorato's Style" which involves shaking them in some kind of hot sauce, then putting them back on the grill for a few minutes making them crispier, they were excellent as always! After dinner, I drove back to the hotel and eventually called it a day!

 Saturday, December 18th, 2010:

I decided that today would be my actual "shopping day" but I wanted to go railfanning first because I had plans for Sunday that would not have allowed me to railfan in Amsterdam. So after a quick breakfast at a nearby Dunkin' Donuts, I drove out to Amsterdam and spent part of the day at the Amtrak Station there. There were 2 other railfans there as well and there ended up being a virtual hit parade of CSX Freights during the time I was there, lots of fun! I Also saw 3 Amtrak trains as well! You'll see photos of the trains a little bit later. I then drove back to Albany to put away the camera then would go get my shopping done. I later met up with a friend of mine at a "Five Guys" restaurant. This is a chain we don't have in Buffalo and the food was excellent! It reminds me a lot of a hot dog stand I ate at many times over the years in Angola, NY called "Connor's Hot Dog Stand". Anyone reading this from that part of Western New York will know what I'm talking about! I ended up talking with another customer in the restaurant who was also from Western New York! We talked mostly about football! After dinner, I drove back to the hotel and called it a day…

 Sunday, December 19th, 2010:

I had breakfast this morning in the hotel lobby. It was a small buffet (cost $9.95) and the food was decent. I then took a drive out to Newburgh, NY to visit the facility that is part of one of my favorite TV shows…American Chopper! Now, I do not own a motorcycle, but I watch that show all the time because the bikes they build are nothing short of incredible. As crazy as it may sound, I actually draw inspiration for some of the web graphics I create for this site just from watching those bikes get built! I drove over to their world headquarters which serves as their main bike building shop as well as their museum/souvenir shop. There were several bikes on display and photography is permitted inside their facilities. You'll see some photos from there a little later. They even have a shop floor viewing area though there was nobody there today working, likely because it was a Sunday. After visiting this amazing place, I was given directions on how to find Paul Teutul Jr.'s shop for his company "Paul Jr. Designs". If you don't follow the show, Paul Jr. used to work as part of Orange County Choppers alongside his father Paul Teutul Sr. and his brother Mikey. Well long story short, Paul Jr. no longer works for OCC and has since started his own company. I eventually drove over by his shop though it is much smaller and is all roped off so you really can't go near it but I was able to get one photo of it from the road. His facility is located in nearby Rock Tavern, NY. I had lunch at McDonald's then drove over the Newburgh/Beacon Bridge over the mighty Hudson River over to nearby Beacon, NY to go railfanning for a bit on the Metro-North Railroad. I stayed there for about an hour as it was getting dark and I was just about freezing to death! I then made the drive back to Albany up the Thruway. I'm beginning to think I've dropped a serious amount of money on Thruway tolls on this trip! I'm proud of myself though, since I never once drove through the EZ-Pass lane with the rental car (I have an EZ-Pass on my personal vehicle), knock on wood! After getting back to the hotel, and a quick dinner from Subway, I eventually continued writing this travelogue while watching some of NBC's Sunday Night Football. I would be going home tomorrow, and so ends today...

 Monday, December 20th, 2010:

I woke up and had breakfast at the nearby Dunkin Donuts. I then packed up my stuff and checked out of the hotel and drove back to Schenectady to turn in the rental car at Enterprise. I mentioned this in my last travelogue and I'll say it again here: If I could make one recommendation to anyone taking a trip like this: A GPS is a great tool to have. They easily mount in any car using a suction cup that likely will come with the unit (I have a Garmin Nuvi 255W and it came with one). I had no idea where some of the places I visited were located and I've had only so-so success with online map services in the past. There are many models of GPS units available and they don't cost an arm and a leg either! After arriving at Enterprise, I was given a ride back to the Amtrak Station and ventured up to the platform to see a late Empire Service Train #284, however my train, #281 would end up arriving first so I never got a photo of #284 and only got a "quick photo" of #281. We left Schenectady at 1:21pm, running 4 minutes late, no big deal there. The consist for today's train is shown below:

My coach was Amfleet I #82582, a refurbished coach and it was very much packed! There was definitely a good sized crowd on this train once again because it's less than a week before Christmas! I walked back to the Cafe Car to get a little snack as I decided I'd eat dinner once I got back home. The attendant remembered me from a prior trip and lets just say, this guy really enjoyed his work and you could tell by his personality that he loved his job and interaction with customers. Amtrak needs more people like this, seriously! We made our next station stop at Amsterdam, NY while I waited in line to get some food. I purchased a hot dog and a Diet Pepsi and chatted briefly with the crew. The conductor on today's train recognized me from a prior trip as well, I rode with him back in 2006! The crew on today's train was absolutely top notch in terms of the quality of their work. I've rode 2 trains on this trip and have had excellent crews on both! At our next station stop of Utica, I was able to get a quick photo of the train there. We departed Utica at 2:40pm, running 11 minutes late. Timekeeping on this run wasn't bad considering how busy the train was! I showed this web site to the crew as well as what was at the time some unreleased (By the time you read this, it's already on the site) work on my travelogue from my last trip back in October. We made our next station stop at Rome, NY and was out of there at 2:55pm running 12 minutes late. We passed by a busy DeWitt yard then slowed down as we were following CSX train Q-161 for a fair distance. We eventually pulled onto Track #7 and into the Syracuse Station and arrived there at 3:44pm, running 11 minutes late.
We departed there at 5:06pm, 14 minutes late, having made up a little time. I chatted with our conductor for a bit then walked into the cafe car only to see someone I know from the Empire State Passenger Association also riding the train today, he told me he rode Train #64 – The Maple Leaf to Rochester and was now heading back to Buffalo on this train. I chatted with him all they way until I got to about Lancaster and headed back to my coach to get my luggage and get ready to get off the train as Buffalo-Depew Station was my stop. At 5:58pm, only 6 minutes late, we arrived at Buffalo-Depew Station! I dragged my bags down to my car which only had about 1/2 inch of snow on it so it would appear that Buffalo didn't get much snow over the weekend, which is a good thing since we're notorious for getting a serious amount of snow in these woods! After an extended warm-up of my car since it hadn't moved in 3 days, I headed for home, and so ends an excellent long weekend that I accomplished everything I set out to do (except eat lunch in a dining car, but oh well).

 In Conclusion:

Amtrak truly did a great thing in calling me last Friday to offer to switch my ticket to Train #284 from #48. As much as I missed having a meal in the dining car, the alternative of missing picking up the rental car would have caused potential problems with the rest of this trip. The crews on both trains from the conductors to the cafe car attendants were excellent. Railfanning in Amsterdam and Beacon was excellent as well. The shopping all got done very easily and quickly and visiting Orange County Choppers was incredible! If you ever watch the show on the Discovery Channel and you're in the Newburgh area, you need to check out their place, even if you don't ride or own a motorcycle yourself (I don't). Below are links to photos taken on this trip! Until next year, and another big Amtrak trip, Happy Holidays, and Happy Railfanning…
