Penn Central opened Colonie Station on June 29, 1969 due to closure of Schenectady Union Station. Colonie Station was also used for Amtrak from May 1971, but the station was closed on September 9, 1979 because new Amtrak Schenectady Station was reopened in 1978 at the site of the old Union Station.
