TrainPixs Network's Guide to Clothing
It might not be stylish but it will keep you safe and comfortable.

Besides your camera, scanner, maps, and other tools that are required for a day (or night) of railfanning. But you have forgot one other thing, clothing. Clothing is one of those essential parts that fit into the general safety of an employee and also for us, the railfan.

According to rule S-21.2, in BNSF Railway's Employee Safety Rules, it states that all employees and visitors are required to wear long pants—including jeans—waist-length shirts with long sleeves at all times. Railfans should follow these rules too, though some of these rules will not be required for typical railfans. While not being too close to the actual machinery, you can wear short sleeves.
