A Collection of Wanderings – Part Four
August was still going strong and the third weekend
we headed west to of all places; Topeka, Kansas for the 2013 Topeka Railroad
Festival. The famous station of the ATSF beckoned us to broadcast the Let’s
Talk Train from their station during it’s big railroad
festival. We arrived on Friday night after
leaving Washington, Missouri about five in the afternoon. The traffic on
Interstate 70 west was backed up because of a pre-season football game. The turnpike part of Kansas was not flat as
most people think. Our hotel for the two night stay in the capital of Kansas
was nice and new or at least it smelled new. The next morning came pretty
quick, as we had to set up the display tent for the American Passenger Heritage
Foundation and the Let’s Talk Trains broadcast equipment. I then walked around
and got the lay of the land. The station is beautiful. The Veterans Memorial
was wonderful. The show was co-hosted by the Midwest host KC Nathan. We
interviewed the Director of the Great Overland station as it is called. The
Railroad Festival director was also on the program.
After the Festival, we said good bye to KC Nathan
and his new friend and then went back to hotel and then ran up to Red Robin for
dinner. On Sunday, we got up drove to north Kansas City and went to the
Mid-America Train and Swap Meet. We found a KATY G Scale boxcar for sale at a
great price. Mrs. Shuttletrain purchased it and then we headed to the Bothwell Lodge outside of Sedalia, Missouri we walked
around the grounds a little then headed to the capital city of Missouri,
Jefferson City. We stopped for dinner and some ice cream at Central Dairy. As
the sun closed in on the horizon, we found our highway 100 back to Washington, Missouri
for a great end to a three day weekend.
