2013 A Collection of Wanderings – Part Five

Ahh. September, the first month of fall. The month of 100 degree days…What? 100 degree days in September in Missouri Wow! That’s right it was over 100 for the first few days of September. Well that did not keep us in town too long. We got an invite from a listener of the Let’s Talk Train show to come to the town of Burlington, Iowa to broadcast the show from the Friends of the Depot event featuring the Amtrak Exhibit Train. So we packed up the Jeep, actually, we never unpacked from the first trip to Georgia and Florida and hit the road at 530 in the morning, stopping along enough to pick up Mrs. Shuttletrain’s and I groupe. We arrived in Burlington about 930 and then set up the broadcast equipment and then proceeded to head to the train for a walk-through. It was very hot in Burlington that day, so I was glad the train had its A/C on full blast. The Amtrak Veteran’s Unit was actually on the point.

After the walk-through, headed over the other booths that were set up for the event. They were even having a drawing for a free train trip to Omaha or Galesburg.

After the show, of course we are hungry..and like everywhere we go, On The Road..We eat local and this time we found an old Rock Island Depot converted into to restaurant. Those that follow this site often know I love converted stations that have been turned into restaurants. This one was called Big Muddy’s on the Mississippi. (didn’t think you knew how to spell Mi-ss-i-ss-i-pp-I did you?)

After being stuffed with great beef, seafood and poultry we headed back down Highway 61, the avenue of the saints and found Washington, Missouri again.

Well that’s it for this edition of Shuttletrain’s Wanderings. I promise baring computer crash issues, like I had this time. I will be back soon with another.
