SEPTA/NS/CSX Stony Creek Branch June 13 2008 |
|
CSX C746 derailed again on the Stony Creek Branch, and while Terra usually handles the work, as they did for the May derailment, due to the weight of the cars in question a call went out to CraneMasters instead. The field next to the eastern North Wales Road grade crossing was used as a staging area for the equipment, which was trucked in from Maryland and Virginia. |
The center of attention was this prototype crane, specifically designed and built for the purpose of rerailing high tonnage cars. The one of a kind Mantis 200RS is conservatively rated at 100 tons, and there are plans to build several more. |
Its treads accompany the crane on a separate flat bed trailer, and just like everyone else, the Mantis puts its feet on one at a time. |
After the treads are attached, the front half of low boy trailer will detach. |
Moving on its own treads and its own power, the assembly of the Mantis is almost complete. |
Just add counterweight (also on its own trailer) and it's ready to go. |
