The Acela Express is Amtrak's flagship service along the Northeast Corridor between Boston, MA and Washington, DC. Acela Power Cars are designed for a top speed of 165 mph, though due to track limitations rarely reach 150 mph. The average speed, including stops, between New York and Washington is 82 mph.

All 40 Acela unit operate in pairs (20 trainsets) in order to eliminate the need to turn around at terminals. All 40 Acela engines are pictured below. This first-generation Acela equipment is scheduled to be retired during 2022, after having been replaced by Avelia Liberty trainsets.
