Foothill Rails--Nevada County Narrow Gauge
Nevada County
Narrow Gauge

Brief History

Constructed to connect the booming mining region around Grass Valley and Nevada City with the Central Pacific in Colfax, the line has the distinction of being the longest operating narrow gauge common carrier in California. It took just over one year to construct, between 1875 and 1876, and ran for 66 years. Service ended during WWII and the line was scrapped by 1943.
