Before the introduction of what has become the accepted configuration of Electrical Multiple Units (EMU's), Underground Trains were made up of the more 'conventional' configuration of a locomotive hauling passenger carriages.
However, in the confines of 'Deep Tube' tunnels steam was not practical, so an alternative means of motive power was needed. Various methods were experimented with, but it was not until electrically powered locomotives became available that a really viable means of traction was found.
