Biron, Wisconsin, USA The Biron paper mill has been around a century. The oldest part is by the Wisconsin River. |
It has had at least 3 owners; currently Nine Dragons. (you might have to scroll this picture to see the right / south side) There is a pulp mill and two paper machines here, but I don't know enough about the exact layout of this place to know what each building is. |
For many years, the local railroad sent a switch engine from Wisconsin Rapids to here every day. Now, a contractor does the switching. Their yellow locomotive is near a beater room. |

The rail yard, and Biron Drive.
On the horizon is a row of white buildings surrounded by trees, which is part of the Rapids East Industrial Park, and the mainline tracks.
.
WFRX, Wells Fargo Rail Corporation RR picture archives shows it was originally a Missouri Pacific unit, and I would guess painted UP yellow. It's called a GP-15, but I call it a rebuilt GP-9. |
.
Red WFRX plug door boxcars for hauling out paper rolls.
I don't know how much pulp fiber comes in as Kraft bales from Canada.
They make pulp fiber from wood, too.
Bales of recycled paper and cardboard comes here, too.

.
The location shown below is a mile south of the mill; see their red smoke stacks in the distance. That's State Highway 54 with a car moving. Joe reported that a derail was installed when the contractor took over the switching duties at the mill. It is a split rail (partial switch) or a 'catch points' type, not just a little wheel wedge chock derail block. |
And a city block south of the derail is the curve of Coyne Junction, and the (former GBW) mainline. (Scroll right) I haven't watched to see when and how the CN comes here, and who hauls cars along the mile to the mill, nor exactly where they hand them off. |
