Add-A-Ride

Introduced on September 1, 1975, as a benefit to offset the raise in fare to 50 cents, especially to those who required a two fare journey to or from work.

Add-A-Ride Tickets were used to provided a third segment to a bus ride (after initial payment of full fare for first segment, and issuance and use of the free transfer for second segment). It is understood it was purchased at the time of initial fare payment.

For example: a passenger at Kings Highway & Coney Island Avenue needs to go to Gerritsen Beach. However the B68 doesn't go to Gerritsen Beach, and is a journey that requires three bus routes.

The passenger boards the southbound B68 - Coney Island Avenue bus and requests a transfer and an Add-A-Ride ticket; and pays the 50 cent regular fare and the 25 cents Add-A-Ride supplemental fare. At Avenue U and Coney Island Avenue, the passenger transfers to the eastbound B3 and gives that bus operator the free transfer. At the point of transfer to the B31 (southbound) at Gerritsen Avenue, the passenger relinquishes the Add-A-Ride Ticket to the southbound B31 bus operator, and is able to complete their journey to Gerritsen Beach.

Prior to the introduction of Add-A-Ride, the passenger would have had to pay another full fare (50 cents) upon boarding the B31 - equalling $1.00 for a one way trip - and a round trip would have cost $2.00. Now with Add-A-Ride, it saved the passenger 25 cents per one way trip, or a full 50 cent fare on a round trip.

If full fare was 50 cents, Add-A-Ride was 25 cents. When the fare rose to 60 cents in June 28, 1980, the Add-A-Ride tickets remained at 25 cents.

It is believed most, if not all surface routes; in all five boroughs had Add-A-Ride tickets, making for extensive dates and route combinations. Add-A-Ride Tickets were issued on NYCTA and MaBSTOA buses at half fare of the normal fare, or in some cases to provide transfer to a non-NYCTA bus route (Triboro, Green, Nassau County, etc).

  • No further or additional transfer was available on an Add-A-Ride Ticket.
  • Removable PM ONLY section at bottom for AM use.
  • Pulp paper with large orange or blue numerals of date issue.
  • Backs blank.
  • Orange or blue denotes direction of travel. Red for special applications.
  • Three letter bus depot code and stock number and printing revision date in selvage.

Add-A-Ride Tickets ended on January 2, 1984; when universal free transfers started, and with the fare increase to 90 cents.

As with the regular transfers on the previous page, we see the decipherable coding on the selvage again for Add-A-Ride transfers. The bus depot "garage" that the particular route is assigned to and serviced at, is used as a three letter code; followed by a stock number. With issued tickets, which have been detached from the selvage; these codes are not normally seen, so they are only visible in on either booklets of transfers or complete transfers broken out of books with their selvage attached.

Private Bus Operators Add-A-Ride

Pioneer Bus Company was created as a school bus operator in 1955, and in 1960 expanded into fare paying passenger bus service with the implementation of the B100 - Kings Highway - Mill Basin Route. In 1972, it added an express bus service from Brooklyn to Manhattan.

On October 22, 1979, its routes were taken over by Command Bus Company.
