December 2003 K4 Update

These photographs were taken between August 2003 and November 2003 by Charles Cantrell, 1361 Volunteer..

Art Leighty building up inside of pony truck swing bolster due to excessive wear. New pony truck swing bolster pins being turned to proper size in the lathe.
Inner firebox sheet has been cut loose prior to removal of it and the outer sheet Side view of 1361 showing both left and right inner and outer side sheets removed.
New mud ring section is prepared for installation on engineer’s side of boiler. Rear view showing engineers side of mud ring and firebox sheets removed.

Drilling begins on the stay bolt pilot holes for the inner firebox sheet. Close-up of repair work being done to the original side and firebox sheets. The work is necessary to repair damage to the threads and surrounding area of the rigid stay bolts.

New firebox throat sheet corner during fabrication. Corner sheet patch sheet has been mounted in place to check fit and for further markup. Completed left and right firebox corner patch sheets prior to installation.
Work begins on the injectors, pop off valves, and other valves. More brake parts destined for buildup work and refinishing.
Newly built up brake rigging parts are marked up for final machining. The pile of repaired items continues to grow.
Stay bolt holes being drilled in new throat sheet patch.

Throat sheet patch prior to welding into position. The rigid stay bolts have been drilled, tapped, and installed.

Work begins on the locomotive shoes. Cracks in the shoes must be ground out in preparation for build up and machining to proper dimensions. Close-up of work being performed on locomotive shoes.
