Maine received a $35-million federal stimulus grant in July 2010 that will help pay for the extension of service from Portland to Freeport and Brunswick.  This extension also will allow passengers from existing Downeaster points and the Northeast Corridor to connect to Midcoast points on the Maine Eastern Railroad’s seasonal Brunswick-Rockland service.  The stimulus grant will augment additional state funds to rehabilitate 26.4 miles of existing track owned by Pan American Railways, upgrades to numerous wayside signals, and improvements to 36 highway grade crossings.  Work has begun and should be done by the end of 2012.
