4-4-0 Americans | |||||||||||||||||
Until being replaced by the larger ten-wheelers, the 4-4-0 type locomotives known as "Americans" or sometimes referred to as "eight wheelers" were the typical Ulster & Delaware locomotive. After the arrival of the newer locomotives many of the Americans were scrapped but several were kept and relegated to lighter duties. The U&D also owned three more modern Americans, #8, 9, & 12, as well as inspection engine #20, these locomotives (except #9) as well as #2 served until the New York Central takeover in 1932.
