Steam Technologies (see webpage for contact info) |
German company operated by
engineer Maik Drechsel who has extensive
international project management experience
with steam turbine installations. Using electronic equipment, Steam Technologies generates in-service indicator diagrams of steam locomotives to evaluate their performance, and to allow optimum setting of valve events. In the UK and US, creation of indicator diagrams was something done only by locomotive companies testing new designs rather than used for valve setting during maintenance. In Germany, nearly every loco had to pass a test run with indicator after an extensive overhaul on engine parts. Most other railways preferred to adjust the valve gear only by measuring of the valve travel and port openings in dead centers which seems to be more straightforward. Nowadays with up-to-date measurement possibilities, this relationship is reversed. Mounting the electronic indicator, doing test runs in both driving directions and evaluating the diagrams takes no more time than try to place the motion best (what is absolutely necessary) in the dead centers and measure the valve travel. Indicator diagrams are the most reliable method to rate the quality and correct setting of valve gear. This system is able to directly display the indicated horsepower of a engine which makes it a valuable tool for performance testing and improvements. |
