Thursday
morning, we started from Meridian, Idaho, which is near Boise. The town of
Boise no longer has an AMTRAK stop, but they continue to hope, in the meantime,
their Union Station has been turned to great banquet center. They do have great
Union Pacific locomotive outside.
The
train station sits on top of a hill overlooking Downtown Boise. I was very
interested in how or why the train station was built way up here. I went
through Boise, one time on the Pioneer before it stopped. I could just remember
that train pulling into the station at any moment. But, reality came back and I
remembered, that we had an important stop to make next at the Golden Spike
National Historical Site.
We
then drove on the actual roadbed of the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific
before leaving the Park. We went through Salt Lake City and visited the Rio
Grande station and the Union Pacific station, but, having no place to park, we
moved on back into Wyoming for the night. The next day we visited Cheyenne’s
depot, and once again due a bikers festival, no place
to park, we moved eastward to North Platte, Nebraska. The
next morning. We got up and visited several of North Platte’s parks that
have locomotives in them.
Next,
we went to the Golden Spike Tower overlooking Bailey Yard.
After staying and watching the action we headed to the Wild
Bill Cody tourist trap and east to St. Joseph, Missouri for the night, and then
Sunday afternoon arrived back in Washington, Missouri. Great trip, over 5570
miles of driving.
Thanks for wandering with us. See you all next time.
