Local History - The Katy Comes to Lincoln, Nebraska
The Missouri-Kansas-Texas (M-K-T/the Katy) almost called Lincoln, Nebraska home for a short time. During the early Eighties, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas line was seen running through Lincoln's east campus neighborhoods over the Mopac's Lincoln-Union line. This was one early sign of the impending merger between the UP and MoPac as the M-K-T, with close ties to UP, exercised it's new trackage rights. After making a number of familiarization trips over the "Siberian Subdivision", as the Katy nic-named it's new northern operations, M-K-T began regular runs on the line while MoPac now worked jointly with Union Pacific on the UP's line. The Katy seriously considered purchasing the line, but as luck would have it, the UP took over the M-K-T -- and it too ceased to operate as a seperate entity in Lincoln.
