Amtrak Empire Builder 75th Anniversary

Chicago Illinois to Seattle Washington

June 11 to June 13, 2004

By Richard Elgenson, RailNews Network

Below left is the east portal of the Cascade Tunnel.  Train speed inside was no more than 35 miles per hour.  Below right is CP East Scenic and the western portal is visible around the curve to the right.  BNSF is doing some trackwork.  An eastbound freight train was waiting for the Empire Builder to clear.

Below, the freight has some very large loads, possibly aircraft parts from Boeing.  Note the flat cars with the semi-circular clearance shapes.

Another stop was at Everett, Washington.  A Sounder trainset was stored there.

At Everett, the Empire Builder finally met the Puget Sound and ran along it for almost 30 miles.
