There is a major snowshed at Norden. The easterly portal is where
the original Transcontinental Central Pacific Railroad was built over
Donner Pass. At this time, there are no rails on this 7 mile
stretch. Union Pacific Railroad is going to re-establish this
portion to rail traffic. However, they have declined a $43
million incentive from the State of California to help in exchange for
more passenger train service to Reno Nevada.
At the Sugar Bowl Ski Area, the track enters a 6,972 foot tunnel
through Mt.. Judah, named for Theodore D. Judah, the chief surveyor for
the Central Pacific Railroad. The northern flank of Mt. Judah is
visible above and left of the train.
This is what the #6 looked like from the ground.
The vacant railroad right-of-way crosses the presnt alignment at the
eastern portal of the tunnel. Across the valley, a snowshed and
tunnel are visible on the vacant railroad alignment.
The railroad now starts its decline towards Turckee and Reno.
West of Donner Lake, Castle Peak is visible. Interstate 80 is
visible opposite the lake.
Below is Stanford Curve, a famous horseshoe turn, changing direction at
the southern flank of Schallenberger Ridge. At times one can see
the track above and across the canyon. My camera made sure to not
allow me to get any shot. When it did work, the trees were thick
and openings were scarce.
Coming into Truckee, a container train was heading westbound.
