Trams

By Prakash Tendulkar

Many of those who have seen Trams plying between Colaba and Sion till mid-60s, may have fond memories of them.

I came across Trams, fully functional and restored, in many parts of the world. Needless to say, all of them brought fond memories of Mumbai Tram.

The driver worked standing for the entire day, driving his tram graciously, ringing bell to alert trace passers.

In mid-60s, Bombay Municipal Corporators decided to end this era and use the land under tracks to widen streets. The urban electric traction survived for a few more years when BMC introduced electric trolley buses made by Skoda from Czechoslovakia. Eventually frequent breakdowns and shortage of parts affected the quality of service.

Then one day, urban electric traction in Mumbai operated by BEST became a history.

Here are my web pages for Trams in other parts of the world.
