Bridge: Morris Avenue

Here is seen the only remaining abutment for the bridge over Morris Avenue, on the south side of Morris Ave. adjacent to Jaeger Lumber. Photo taken by Richard J. King

Here once stood the other abutment for the bridge over Morris Avenue that was removed, along with the bridge itself, in 2007. The abutment stood adjacent to the sidewalk. Part of the embankment was also removed.

Here is seen the embankment for the RVRR tracks on the north side of Morris Avenue. The building in the background is an office complex. In the days of the RVRR it was Tuscan Dairy.  Photo taken by Richard J. King

Between the Wye and Vauxhall Road, the Rahway Valley Railroad crossed over Morris Avenue . The bridge was constructed in 1915 as part of the branch line being built into Maplewood (officially known as the Rahway Valley Line). After the Rahway Valley Railroad was closed in 1992 the bridge remained in place for many years after but in 2007 the bridge was removed. As part of the repaving and improvements being made to Morris Avenue (SR 82) the bridge was put on the chopping block. In the middle of the night a crane hoisted the 92 year structure and hauled it away. Also removed was the abutment on the north side of Morris Avenue as well as a portion of the embankment. Today only the abutment on the south side of Morris Avenue remains.

This aerial view shows the exact location of the former Morris Avenue bridge. The red line denotes the Rahway Valley Line. Also seen in this aerial view is Jaeger Lumber (to the left of the Rahway Valley Line) and Akzo-Nobel (to the right of the Rahway Valley Line, formerly International Paint), both former RVRR customers.
