Grade Crossing: Boulevard

Just south of what was the Kenilworth Yards was the RVRR's crossing of the Boulevard (sometimes referred to as the 'Kenilworth Boulevard') at grade. The grade crossing was part of the original construction of the New York & New Orange Railroad (1897-1898). Once, more or less, an industrial area the Boulevard is now a very busy thoroughfare. Areas along the Boulevard, once occupied by Volco Brass, are now A&P Supermarket. Although the rails are still in place through the road, the rails have been completely removed on the southern end of the crossing (as part of the reactivation effort 2001-2007) and on the north end the rails disappear into obscurity under a covering of dirt and fill.

It is interesting to note that this crossing has all the proper modern street markings for a railroad crossing on the road surface as well as the yellow railroad crossing signs. Although the crossing is clearly out of service, no signs denote that it is. Drivers of vehicles with the "This Vehicle Stops At All Railroad Crossings" stickers, who are none-the-wiser, have been seen to stop at this long closed crossing.

Here we look north into what was the RVRR's Kenilworth Yards (offices, shops, etc.). Compare to this view. 6/18/2013.

Looking south, with the Boulevard at our backs, we can see that the rails abrubtly end. 6/18/2013. Photo taken by Richard J. King. Looking south, with the Boulevard at our backs, we see something that might be confusing to some. While it appears that the tracks would of followed this fill of woodchips, they infact went straight through what is now the A&P parking lot. See "The Kink." 6/18/2013. Photo taken by Richard J. Head Back to the Station!
