CSX Philadelphia Subdivision and Amtrak Northeast Corridor Philadelphia PA July 3 2016 |
Center City Philadelphia features many spots to view rail activity, and one of the most diverse for activity and picturesque for scenery is the River Walk/Penn Park area between Walnut and South Streets. From the bridge over the Schuylkill at South Street, you can see the city skyline with all the new development on both sides of the river, I-76 the Schuylkill Expressway and the River Walk on opposing river banks, as well as the NEC to the left and the Philly Sub to the right. The High Line is out of frame to the left and also behind the camera. From this one spot, you can view Amtrak, SEPTA, CSX and NS trains. |
CSX traffic that works Eastside Yard use the old Baltimore and Ohio trackage of the Philly Sub on the east side of the river, and is also used by NS trains like H86 which comes up the Chester Secondary. In the distance, CSX Q300 traverses the former Pennsylvania Railroad High Line to the 25th Street Viaduct heading down to Greenwich Yard in South Philly. |
On the west side is Amtrak's Northeast Corridor where they are currently replacing some of the last wooden ties with concrete, some 30 years after the replacement work started. The Penn Park complex, which stretches from University Avenue to Walnut Street, is bordered on the west by the High Line which is used by freight traffic to bypass Eastside Yard. Running parallel beneath the High Line is the SEPTA line that is used by Airport, Media/Elwyn and Wilmington/Newark trains. |
The TLM is not used for the detailed work around the switches approaching the station, which must be done the old-fashioned way, by hand, hence the shovels and rakes. |
