Railfan Pictures of the Week - 11/01/2015

SEPTA Main Line Philadelphia, Lansdale and North Wales PA September 26 and 27 2015

The trip into the city for the Papal Visit on Saturday was a lot easier than the return. By 21:30 the line for Fort Washington and Pennbrook stretched up 11th Street from Filbert around the corner at Arch. For those heading back to Warminster, the line (or lack thereof) is on the left.
An hour and a half later, the Fort Washington/Pennbrook line was still at Arch and growing ...
while the SEPTA personnel for the Warminster Line were looking for customers.
Sunday the trains were ready for the increased crowds expected for the Papal Mass. At 10:30 three trains were poised at Lansdale waiting for the call to drop down to Pennbrook.
Alas, there were plenty of seats available but few passengers.
By noon, the empty returning trains were still coming back north but the crowds had dwindled to the point where SEPTA told Pennbrook trains, after loading the remaining passengers, to stop at Fort Washington on the way into the city, picking up the last of the stragglers before inbound service ended shortly after 12:30.

After the numbers were totaled, SEPTA Regional Rail transported 28,575 on Saturday and 34,371 on Sunday, or roughly one sixth of the passengers that they expected but twice the average weekday boardings at the eighteen open stations. Pennbrook actually saw a decline with 2,469 on Saturday but only 1,967 on Sunday. Of the 10,000 tickets available at each station for each day, the lows were Saturday at Marcus Hook with 146 boardings and Sunday at Eastwick with 235; Paoli was the high both days with 3,534 and 5,062 respectively. Cornwells Heights, with its huge parking lot, Marcus Hook, and Eastwick all saw fewer boardings than on a typical weekday, which would see an average of about 120,000 passengers on the entire system. Of course almost 90% of the stations, such as North Wales, were closed for the weekend.
