SEPTA Main Line North Broad Station North Philadelphia PA April 11 2015 |
SEPTA's North Broad Station has the distinction of being the only SEPTA station outside of center city that has all former Reading Company routes passing through it, although only Lansdale/Doylestown, Manayunk/Norristown and Warminster trains stop there. Before the Center City Commuter Tunnel, it was the last stop before Reading Terminal and was the Pattison Avenue Station of its day. It was within blocks of both the Baker Bowl, home of the Philadelphia Phillies from 1887 to June 1938, and Shibe Park/Connie Mack Stadium, home first to the Philadelphia Athletics and, after the Baker Bowl was abandoned, the Phillies as well (until the A's left for Kansas City in 1955 and the Phillies left in 1970). The site of the Baker Bowl is now occupied by a gas station whose blue, red and yellow roof can be seen to the left. The former site of the Reading Company's coach yard is to the right and once occupied half the block at Lehigh Avenue and 13th Street, only a portion of which is still used by SEPTA. |
A Doylestown train stops at the station as a West Trenton train passes through. |
Looking south from the station at the four track main, on the left is what remains of the siding for the old coach yard .... |
spotted on Salt Siding, among other equipment, are the two flats that SEPTA picked up in Norristown on April 3 2015. |
