NS Dale Secondary Norristown PA March 21 2015 |
SEPTA continued tinkering with its reconfigured Kalb Interlocking the last two weekends in March, so NS once more detoured 21E and 24K over Amtrak's Keystone Corridor and the NS Dale Secondary. Here, NS 24K passes "under wires" as it approaches CP King and the NS Morrisville Line where it will stop and drop off its Amtrak pilot and continue to Morrisville. |
The siding to the left used to service a cold storage facility, but although it remains, the business is long gone. There is only one customer left on the Dale Secondary: Huhtamaki, a plastics manufacturer in Malvern that still receives covered hoppers delivered by local H82. The other track of the former Pennsylvania Railroad Trenton Cutoff is now the Earnest Running Track and is used to park trains and MOW equipment (the caboose of an outlawed H84 can be seen in the second photograph below). |
And although the line is no longer electrified, the railroads have found that removing all the wires can result in movement of the remaining catenary structures (as in "they can fall over"), so the guide wire and lateral support wires stay. |
Standing on the overpass reminded me of the time back in 1993 when Conrail used the siding to park a bunch of SEPTA/Reading Blueliners that developed hot journal issues on their way up to their new owner, the Reading Company Technical and Historical Society. |
