NS Connecting Track to the Morrisville Line Norristown PA February 6 2013 |
Belching smoke and spitting sparks, wheezing and huffing as it works the rails, the railgrinder is probably the closest thing to steam power in modern railroading. LORAM railgrinder LMIX 3405 (aka RG405) has been working on the Norfolk Southern Lines around Philadelphia this past week. On Thursday February 6 it worked the Morrisville Line, here on the western end grinding the curve on the Connecting Track at Ford Street in Norristown. |
The railgrinder consists of motive power units, water tank cars like the one below ... |
and grinding units. This one had a pair of water tank cars and three grinders. |
Depending on the direction they are headed, this could be the back end or the front end, although generally this is the rear of the unit. |
While most of the time the results of the work are limited to the railroad proper and out of the way of the general public, grade crossings require a little TLC ... |
and occasionally some H2O from one of the two water guns on the rear. |
