ESPN Chester Valley Branch Bridgeport PA May 23 2011 |
The ex-Reading Chester Valley Branch is currently being dismantled after formal abandonment by the current operator East Penn Railroad (ESPN) was approved. The line paralleled (and predated) Route 202 and Route 30 bypass from Bridgeport to Downingtown. Most of the line was abandoned by Conrail around 1990 but a short section of a little more than two miles on the eastern end in Bridgeport PA remained in service until a few years ago. The line connected with the NS Harrisburg Line at MP 17, and that connection remains until the last car, appropriately enough a Chester Valley box car, is moved. |
The rails were cut just inches from the wheels of CHTS 1028 and the ties and rails beyond that have already been removed. |
Flashers and all other appliances are already gone from the Fourth Street grade crossing. |
Removal of the ties and rails continues west through Bridgeport. |
Watched over by a sign from a previous operator, Penn Eastern Rail Lines, equipment was in the process of erasing the line where it crossed under the Norristown High Speed Line... |
and looking west at Fifth Street, the rails had already been cut in preparation for removal. |
