CSX Bethlehem Branch and SEPTA Main Line Lansdale PA and SEPTA/CSX/NS Stony Creek Branch Sterigere Street Norristown PA January 7 2011 |
CSX called two crews for Lansdale PA on Friday January 7 2011: the normal B738 to work the Bethlehem Branch and an extra C946 to take outbounds to Woodbourne Yard and bring back the inbounds by way of the Stony Creek Branch and NS Morrisville Line. CSX GP40-2 6159 and 6240 pull C946 off the Bethlehem Industrial while the crew of B738 helps out by arming the marker. |
C946 stops at Lansdale Station to retrieve paperwork for their run ... |
then heads down the Stony Creek Branch. |
Just before noon, C946 stopped at Sterigere Street in Norristown to wait for SEPTA to give them the signal at Elm Street, but shortly after getting the go-ahead to proceed, a section of rail rolled under the train, derailing the trailing truck of 6240, a covered hopper and three box cars. Since the maintenance of the eastern end (that is railroad eastern, but more familiar to you and me as the western end) of the Stony Creek Branch is under the watchful eyes of NS, both CSX and NS employees descended on the scene to see which section of railroad would need to be rebuilt this time (the unofficial motto of the MOW department should be "Rebuilding the Stony Creek Branch, one derailment at a time!"). Later in the afternoon, B738 went down to pull the portion of the train still on the rails clear of the grade crossing to allow vehicular traffic to resume. The rerailing would wait a couple days due to equipment availability. |
