SEPTA Doylestown Branch Link Belt Siding New Britain PA January 6 2011 |
SEPTA continues work on the new Link Belt Siding. The right of way has been graded and the initial ballast laid down, so the next order of business is getting the rail ready. For smaller segments such as this, instead of dropping continuous welded rail, SEPTA uses a butt welder to create welded rail from sections. |
Each section of rail is lined up and the butt welder is lowered over the joint and the sparks fly. |
After each section is welded, the rail is pulled clear and the process is repeated for the next. |
While the sections are welded, the completed joints are cleaned up. |
