SEPTA/NS/CSX Stony Creek Branch North Wales and Whitpain PA March 5 2009

Normally CSX B738 works north out of Lansdale on the Bethlehem Branch, but today they make a trip south (railroad east) on the Stony Creek Branch to pick up an outlawed C746 coming back from South Philadelphia. To the right is the remnants of the Lehigh Valley Transit Philadelphia Division right of way from Allentown to Norristown. The Stony Creek Branch has several flavors to it; in the background pictured here is "modern" heavy industry: Merck's West Point pharmaceutical plant.
Mostly hidden by trees on either side are relatively recent bedroom communities.
A little farther down the line it passes a small horse farm.
There are fairly large patches of open fields and forests.
Just out of sight from this shot at North Wales Road is a brand new housing development carved out of what were farms and wilderness just a few years ago.
The orange of temporary construction fences can be seen in many places along the line, and a lot of the new neighbors seem clueless as the the status of the railroad in their backyard. While waiting for B738 to pass, a motorist stopped by the downed gates asked "Is this line active?"
