Unusual Three Engine Lashup on East Penn Railway's Octoraro Branch The East Penn Railway normally operates U23B #PRL 2206 on the (ex-PRR) Octoraro Branch on Tuesdays and Thursdays, taking cars from Chadds Ford Junction (junction with the (ex-RDG) Wilminton Northern Branch) in the morning, delivering to customers as far as Oxford, PA and making the return in the afternoon. They also normally operate B30-7 #7874 & #7811 on the Wilminton Northern Branch on Monday-Wednesday-Friday (as needed) between Coatesville, PA and the CSX yard at Elsmere, DE. |
| However, on Friday July 6, things went a little differently. The two B30-7 units showed up in Kennett Square on the Octoraro Branch where the crew was seen making connections with 2206. |

A chat with the crew explained the unusual lashup. Due to the 4th of July holiday the normal runs were disrupted, so they were making deliveries on Friday. Also, #2206 required inspection and was to be left at Embreeville, PA over the weekend. Apparently, as they were the only crew, they brought the extra engines along for the ride delivering 6 loads. | The next day, U23B 2206 was in Embreeville. I've always wondered how East Penn maintained and inspected the locomotives on their multiple lines. There's a small maintenance garage next to the tracks (behind the No Trespassing sign). Note the landlocked RF&P and Conrail boxcars being used for storage of lime (for a local farmer?) |
