2006 Liberty Limited Train to the Annual Army-Navy Game |
For the second, and possibly last time, a group of recuperating soldiers and sailors from Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Bethesda Naval Hospital rode on a train of private varnish from Washington DC to Philadelphia PA where they were guests at the annual Army-Navy game at Lincoln Financial Field. Tom Gears found a nice new spot to lens the train, from the top of a new parking garage in downtown Wilmington DE. Copyright © 2006 Thomas Gears |
The train ran right on schedule, arriving in CSX Greenwich Yard in South Philadelphia just after 11:30 with Pennsylvania 120 in its usual place of honor. |
The first order of business appeared to be feeding the train, both man and machine. Waiting for the train were couple of fuel trucks as well as vans from a local delicatessen. The yard has been reconfigured from its use under PRR, PC and CR as a general merchandise and bulk commodity yard into a mostly intermodal yard under CSX (CP and NS also operate from the yard), as witnessed by the containers and the loaded cars from train Q191 in the background. |
It has been reported that this may be the last train of its kind, as the game will be played in Baltimore next year (returning to Philadelphia in 2008), and the Pentagon has announced plans to consolidate medical facilities in the Washington DC area with Walter Reed currently scheduled to close within a few years. |
The consist for CSX P910-02 (as it was called from CP Arsenal to Greenwich Yard) was Juniata Terminal PRR E8A 5711 and 5809, passenger cars Caritas, Ohio River, Chapel Hill, MKT 403, Oliver Hazard Perry, Golden Tower, J. Pinckney Henderson, Golden Moon, Imperial Leaf, Birken, Silver Shore, Silver Express, Mount Vernon, Dover Harbor, Kitchi Gammi Club, Little Juniata Rapids, Warrior Ridge and Pennsylvania 120. Pictures and consist of last year's train can be found here. |
