Juniata Terminal Company Philadelphia PA June 1990

Another prototype tour for the NMRA Independence Junction Convention in July is a trip to the Juniata Park section of Philadelphia to visit the offices of model manufacturer Bachmann on Erie Avenue and the facilities of nearby Juniata Terminal Company at B and Venango Streets. The site of Juniata Terminal was formerly known as the Pennsylvania Railroad's Fairhill Yard, and it is still referred to by the Conrail South Jersey dispatcher by that name to this day. Built in 1928, it was originally used as a transloading facility for LCL (less than-car-load) container shipments. Among Philadelphians the area is also known as the home of radio manufacturer Philco, later Philco-Ford, and to model railroaders, the home of model distributor AHM and its successor IHC, whose initials are painted on the water tower in the background. The area in the foreground was once a sea of rails, but time has erased almost all memory of those days.
To riders on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, it is known for the collection of old passenger cars and other equipment stored outside the shops, visible from trains on the east side of the tracks as they make their way between North Philadelphia Station and Frankford Junction, and for .....
the two prominent billboards, one sporting a PRR passenger train, and this one of a PRR freight led by GG-1 4839 in a very green Brunswick Green. On this day, sitting among the weeds on one of the few yard tracks still in use was former PRR now Conrail G43C 578902 along with ...
the former PRR 439172 now Conrail G26C gondola 64954, modified for maintenance of way service and used to transport prefabricated track switches. The leftmost panel bears two notations probably related to the modifications: 3RD RAIL PROHIBITED and DO NOT HUMP.
