North Penn Model Railroad Lansdale PA 1994 |
Next month, the National Model Railroad Association will hold its annual convention, dubbed Independence Junction, in Philadelphia, and this is the first of a series that will feature information about a number of the happenings surrounding this week-long event. Among the highlights of the convention will be tours of local model railroader's "home roads". Four of the layouts open to the convention attendees happen to be the work of former member's of the late great North Penn Model Railroad: Jim Maurer, Don Bell, John Rogers and Pat McTeigue. Other alumni of NPMRR migrated to the Oaks Model Railroad Club, and after the premature demise of OMRC in 2002, formed the Royersford Modular Model Railroad. The Royersford group will be one of six clubs participating in the Modular Layout at the convention. The last time the convention was in our backyard, Valley Forge in 1993, the North Penn was in its final year of operation. From that layout, here are some pictures of the artistic, design, landscaping and mechanical skills the lucky visitors will get to see. A picture of the wharf and Baltimore truss bridge spanning the yard area. |
The Norritonville Engine Terminal and Roundhouse, where most major maintenance was done. |
Down in a valley crisscrossed by rails overhead, the dark and deserted main street of the Village of Vernfield in the early morning light. |
An aerial view of the Post Office and Union Station, with the rowhouses of Smoketown just to the left. |
The definition of a true railroad town is where one side of the street is for homes, shops and City Hall, and the other side is all business, that is, all railroad. |
