NS Morrisville Line Fort Washington PA May 13 2006 |
As part of the Route 309 Reconstruction project, the 50 year old PRR bridge spanning the roadway at Fort Washington was dismantled and removed this weekend. The preparation work, done over the course of a few months, required removal of the track, ballast and concrete base, followed by the cutting into sections of the steel floor, as well as the end and side pieces. The last part removed was the north side of the bridge, which weighed approximately 75 tons. The crane on the right, on site the past few months, was used for some of the lighter lifting, while his bigger brother was brought especially for the heavy work on Saturday. |
The new permanent bridge has been ordered and should be delivered in the fall, with an estimated completion date of the railroad portion of the work before the end of the year. |
