Amtrak Northeast Corridor North Philadelphia Station Philadelphia PA April 16 2004

A view looking west from the west end of the eastbound platform at North Philadelphia Station. On this day, Amtrak had MOW personnel on the ground west of the station checking the tracks. The tracks to the far right connect to the R8 Chestnut Hill West Branch as well as the Reading connection to the R6 Norristown Branch at 16th Street Junction.
A westbound making some noise going through the work area with Amtrak conference car 9800 in its tail.
Some years ago, North Philadelphia tower was adopted by the city's outdoor mural project.
A westbound Acela rolls past the station on Track 3. The station once had 8 tracks through it: Track 0 (aka Zoo Siding, Zoo Secondary Track, Zoo Running Track, or "0" Yard Track) was sold to Conrail (who needed it when they put in the Engleside Connection to the former Reading Railroad main near Girard and cut its connection to the NEC at Zoo in the 1990's) and became its Delair Branch, Track 1 diverged into a Eastward station track with both Track 1 and the EST accessing the eastbound platform, Tracks 2 and 3 bypassed the station, Track 4 diverged into a Westward station track with both Track 4 and the WST accessing the westbound platform, and Track 5 (aka "5" Yard Track), which ran from Zoo to Shore and serviced industries along the NEC, which Track 0 was also used for, and still is today. As part of a track simplification project, Tracks 1 (in the foreground) and 5 (not pictured) had recently been removed at the station, and now Track 2 is a station track. For track diagrams from the Pennsy era check out The Broad Way and for the Amtrak era check out Blockstation.Net .
The Acela would be arriving at 30th Street Station within minutes.
